situational awareness and iq enhancement for Rugby Sevens

Additional Information

This private page has been developed for selected individuals for the development of US Air Force Sevens Rugby Situational Awareness and Game IQ.

Objective: To increase players understanding of Sevens Rugby by increasing the learning curve, advancing communication, individual, sub-group and team positioning and general understanding of a baseline structure and providing assessment strategies.

Silo's: Each silo has a specific objective that develops players understanding of basic situations and the options that maybe presented. As well as, each individual player is given a general task. By defining these tasks positionally it creates a flow on effect of information that lifts the baseline of player intelligence.

This portal  is for  current members of the US Air Force Rugby Sevens Team only. So as much as you can read, uptake and put into practice these basics the more base we have as a program. The bigger the base the better the launchpad. All information remains the property of present coaching staff and creator Theo Bennett. Any attempt to copy or to share this link (And we will find you) first the OIC of Rugby will gladly entertain you and our coaching staff (Mainly Cam) will initiate a one one contact session at an appropriate base.

Attack Set Up

3210 Tri Shape

3210 Roles

3 = Outside Edge / Wing

2 = Centre

1 = Inside Pivot

0 = Anticipator / Feeder

What this system promotes is a way to evolve and function beyond traditional Sevens Game plans. It also creates a team game of consistent awareness to promote using IQ and skill over simple player super powers. As we all know, we are often only one or two injuries away from humbledom and that, as tournaments progress, other teams can have advantages on a player v player scale. The point of difference to create success in both these cases is to have a greater understanding of the game. But in a simplistic way so that over all IQ lifts an entire team performance.

Note: There are two sevens styles.

1. Who plays the game before the gain line.

2. Who plays the game through the gain line.

Awareness should start from the Centre (2) and Outside Edge (3) as they have the best view of the field. However, this depends on if  they are still getting up from previous contact. If they are quickly back in the game they can assess opportunities and exploit defensive weaknesses.

The 2 and 3 positions are essential readers of the game.

Variables to assess next play are:

  • State of the previous ruck (Lightening Fast, Fast, Slow)
  • Is the contact positive or negative
  • Their Positioning in relation to the current attack
  • Defensive structure or lack there of

3210 Tri Shape

3210 Tri Shape

3210 Tri Shape

Here the shape for next play is a Triangle, not deep deep. This is to give the Pivot (1) to provide the support 'frame work' and options to play and :

  • Feeder
  • Cut out ball to 3
  • Switch with 2 and possible  'Option'
  • 1 Hard Contact ball
  • 2 Hard Contact ball
  • Wrap Ball with 0

Benefits of the Tri Shape is that it forces a decision from the defending edge player. They will either stay off and call for numbers, get into the passing lane, try to pressure the Attacking Edge (3) or the Centre (2). As attacking players, reading these situation enhances a game that is played through the defensive line.

Framework on 2 'Unders'

Overs:

When an attacking player attacks the outside shoulder of the defender in front of them.

SLOW IN AND SNAP OUT

GO HARD or PLAY BALL

NOTE:

We can call overs, or we can give 2 the freedom to choose the way forward.

This depends on the supports ability to read on the move. To make this happen, often 2 needs the ball clean and early.

Unders:

When an attacking player attacks the inside shoulder of the defending player in front.

DRAG OUT AND SNAP IN

NOTE:

This can also create a wrap from a framework, or a BB for a hole runner.

Thoughts of 2

Framework on 2 'Unders'

Thoughts of 2

Yes, 2 needs to think a lot!

As he follows 1 to reposition after a ruck then:

Checks the ball

Checks the defense

Checks the type of ruck

Checks the defense

Makes the call

Listens for changes from 3

Executes  action

Whats the best decision?

What would you decide?

0 - Is the anticipator

(Support, Scrapes the Back, Feeds)

1 - Reads while waiting in a shallow line

2. Reads Overs or Unders

3. Decides his fate.

NOTE:

3 has to find a way forward.

What would you decide?

What would you decide?

What could be the calls you'd hear?

Are you reading the defense?

What needs to happen if there are players down in midfield and the D is hot coming at you?
